EDUCATION CHAIRMEN

LPaul and Sally Schmidt

LPaul and Sally each began square dancing in the late 1980s, met on the square dance floor in 2002, and married in June 2003. Their annual anniversary trip is to the National Square Dance Convention. They have been active in square dancing and square dance leadership at the local, state, and national levels.

LPaul and Sally have been part of the United Square Dancers of America Executive Committee since 2012, serving as President, Western Region Vice President, Information Officer, and Sound Chair. They have been active in the California Square Dance Council, holding the offices of President, Southern Area Vice President, Secretary, and Public Relations Director. They have also held a number of offices and Executive Board committee positions with the San Diego Square Dance Association, including President and Vice President.

LPaul and Sally served as Chairman of the successful 2011 California State Square Dance Convention, bringing about 1300 dancers to San Diego. Currently, they are the General Chairman for the upcoming USAWest Square Dance Convention, to be held in San Diego in August 2021. LPaul has worked on the committee for two National Conventions as Communications Director in both 2001 and 2009, and Sally served as Social and Special Events Secretary for the 2009 Convention in Long Beach.

LPaul and Sally are strong supporters of the education component of the square dance activity. They have facilitated education sessions at two National Conventions on behalf of the United Square Dancers of America and hosted sessions at California State Square Dance Conventions and regional festivals. They have also been part of a panel on the history of square dancing, actively presented by the California Heritage Dancers at the 2011 California State Convention and the 2018 USAWest Convention.

LPaul is a former freight driver and Sally is a former educational administrator who still works part-time as a consultant. They continue as active dancers with two local clubs as well as the California Heritage Dancers exhibition group. They enjoy traveling regularly to square dance activities around California and across the country.
